Nutrition Agnostic

Let’s face it! We all get overwhelmed when it comes to choosing the right meal plan or diet philosophy that suites our needs. We are constantly bombarded with the latest fads, evil foods to avoid, or the promise that some “magic foods” will cure all of our health issues, help us loose 10lbs in a week, and so on. I hate to be the bearer of bad new but there is absolutely no magic pill. Wah Wah!

The truth is every single one of us is working with a different body type, different goals, and dietary habits. What it really comes down to is what nutrition philosophy or combo of philosophies will help you reach and maintain your goal. “MAINTAIN” is the key word here! The answer is not to put yourself on a restrictive plan for a few months where you feel miserable only to completely fall off the wagon and go back to old habits. Your plan must fit your lifestyle and you’ve got to be willing to be flexible as years pass. What works for you today may not 10 years down the road.

As I was listening to the podcast linked below I had a major Ah-ha moment when I heard this statement. “I don’t believe there’s a single, absolutely positively, without-a-doubt best diet for every person to follow, always, and forever. When you work with actual human beings, you must be a nutritional agnostic.” My thoughts exactly!

What it really comes down to is finding what works best for YOU through trial and error. I am a Flexible dieter (by that I mean, the food that you eat not “the food that you eat to loose weight”)  I eat according to my current fitness and body composition goals. Does that mean what I do will work for you? Absolutely not. Become familiar with your habits, your triggers, and find what rings true to your personal philosophies regarding nutrition. Just because people around your are Paleo, Keto, or Clean Eaters does not mean that it is the be all end all or even the right nutrition plan for you. Ask yourself the question, am I doing this because it aligns with my beliefs about nutrition and health or am I jumping on the bandwagon of another fad diet?

Precision Nutrition has quickly become one of my favorite go to reference pages/podcasts when it comes to straight forward realistic nutritional advice. Give it a listen, you may have a few Ah-ha moments yourself!

“Because what you focus on may not matter as much as simply caring more about what you’re eating in the first place.”

Remember, it’s YOU vs. YOU!

XOXO,

Nicole

Hi Nicole – Thank you for sharing your invaluable thoughts on nutritional agnosticism. I agree whole-heartedly with you that there is no such thing as the "right diet" out there. We all have unique experiences with food. And thank you for including Precision Nutrition as well. I've added it to my resources list!
